Budget supermarket sales rise

IN NUMBERS: UK budget supermarkets are sprinting ahead as sales registered their biggest rise so far this year.

Supermarket sales grew by 1.1% in the 12 weeks to the end of 27 March compared with the same period last year, according to Kantar Worldpanel, boosted by an early Easter.

However, both Lidl and Aldi saw double-digit growth, up by 17.7% and 14.4% respectively.

Tesco remains the market leader, ringing up £7.2bn in sales and securing 28% of the market.
