A beach hut in Abersoch, north Wales, sold for £153,000 off a guide price of £85,000 at Countrywide’s April auction.
The sale had a 71% success rate and brought in £4.2m from 41 lots. The day’s total was 55% lower than the amount raised last month from 58 lots, but up from last April’s £5.2m.
The freehold timber beach hut has no electricity, water or drainage. Overnight sleeping is prohibited.
The hut fetched considerably more than several houses sold on the day, including a two-bedroom house in Gwent, south Wales, which sold for £25,000 – the same amount that was raised for a two-bedroom semi-detached house in Wheatley Hill, County Durham.
The largest lot of the day was a two-bedroom flat in Willesden Green, NW10, on the ground floor of a period conversion, with sole use of a garden. Guided at £400,000, it sold for £480,000.
A three-bedroom “lateral flat” in Knightsbridge, SW1, with nine years left on the lease and access to tennis courts, was guided at £950,000, but failed to make its reserve of £850,000.
Flats in the same mansion block have sold for up to £2.5m in recent years.
The sale took place at Le Meridien Piccadilly Hotel, W1.
