Far East Consortium’s £500m residential-led development Alpha Square in Canary Wharf, E14, has been approved by the London deputy mayor for planning.
Sir Edward Lister approved the scheme following a public hearing in City Hall this afternoon.
The mixed-use development comprises two towers of 34 and 65 storeys. In total, it will deliver 634 flats, of which 125 (25%) will be affordable.
The scheme also includes a 231-bedroom hotel, a primary school, health centre and retail space.
Mayor of London Boris Johnson called in the scheme in March after it was rejected by Tower Hamlets Council.
The local authority rejected the scheme on the grounds of its height, massing, and affordable housing provision.
However, the scheme was recommended for approval by GLA planners last week.
Sir Edward said: “I think on balance the scheme is contributing a lot to the island.”
Planning permission was granted on the condition of a section 106 agreement and compliance conditions set out in the GLA planners’ report.
