The traditional dream of retiring to the seaside is being replaced, with pensioners instead lured by upmarket cathedral cities and busy market towns, according to a report by Experian.
The report identifies four categories of pensioners: Smarties, who prefer market towns to the seaside; Diamond Days – affluent suburbanites who are mortgage free; Senior Security – comfortably off but risk averse; and Vintage Value – the least well-off group.
Among the places favoured by the Smarties group are Bangor, Dorchester, Kendal and Stratford-upon-Avon. The Diamond Days group, meanwhile, tend to favour the southeast of England.
