Cambridge has been highlighted as one of UK’s fastest growing cities, with 50 cranes spread across the city, according to Bidwells.
The advisory firm recorded 14 developments starting in the city last year.
Although Cambridge only has a population of 185,000, Bidwells said its growth levels were comparable to those of Birmingham and Manchester.
The data shows that, at the time of the survey, Cambridge had one crane on the skyline for every 2,500 people.
In 2015, the Deloitte Crane Survey recorded nine starts in Birmingham, which has a population of 2.5m, and 21 projects in Manchester, which has a population of 2.4m.
As well as new housing developments in Cambridge, major schemes include AstraZeneca’s global R&D centre and headquarters on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, the CB1 development at the station and the University of Cambridge-led North West Cambridge initiative, which will include homes for staff and students, R&D space and community facilities such as a primary school, a health centre and shops.
Recent data from Cambridge Ahead revealed that for every £100 generated by business in the UK as revenue, Cambridge could account for £1.
