JLL’s Property Triathlon North will be held in memory of Tim Bacon, chairman of Living Ventures, who passed away in April.
A percentage of proceeds from this year’s event on 29 July at MediaCityUK, Salford Quays, will go to Bacon’s nominated charity, The Christie, for research into melanoma – the disease that Bacon battled for some years.
Proceeds will be shared with the Melanoma Research Fund and Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, where Bacon’s 11-year-old nephew, Jett Bacon, was cared for before he died in the same week as his uncle from a rare form of bone cancer.
Jett’s parents want to enhance the environment for children during this difficult time, and money donated to the hospital will help purchase a state-of-the-art chemotherapy infusion pump units in their son’s memory.
JLL’s nominated charity, the Starlight Children’s Foundation, will also receive a percentage of donations.
Stephen Wild, managing director of MediaCityUK, said: “As many have said, Tim was a pioneer in transforming Manchester’s bar and restaurant scene. If it wasn’t for his flair and instinctive talent, some of the best-known venues such as The Alchemist, Australasia, The Botanist and Manchester House would not exist, and I’m certain the city wouldn’t be as vibrant as it is today.
“He truly was a property personality who went about business in friendly, open and honest way – it is particularly poignant that the race will start where the recently announced Alchemist will open in 2017.”
The triathlon is open to anyone in, or connected to, the property industry. The sprint event will comprise a 750-metre swim in the clear waters of dock 9, a 20km bike ride and a 5km run.
