Midland Metro extension gets the go-ahead

Midland-Metro-expansionTransport secretary Patrick McLoughlin has given the go-ahead to the £18m extension of the Midland Metro through Wolverhampton, West Midlands.

The decision will unlock the next phase of the wider £120m regeneration of the city centre.

The project will support the redevelopment of a site next to the railway station and will provide better connectivity between train and bus services.

The new route will travel along Pipers Row, stopping outside the bus station, before reaching the railway station – which will also undergo a transformation as part of the Wolverhampton Interchange Project.

It will also provide better connections to the proposed HS2 station in Birmingham’s Curzon district and along Birmingham’s Broad Street via Centenary Square.

The project forms part of the wider Interchange project funded by the Black Country Local Enterprise Partnership, City of Wolverhampton Council and the West Midlands Combined Authority.

Work will start on site for the metro extension later this year, with completion due in 2019.
