The number of properties advertised for rent rose by 8% on the year in the three months to the end of June, figures from Rightmove show.
Most of the properties were in London, where the increase was 22%, and the southeast.
The average rent asked fell 1.1% in London but rose elsewhere, led by the east of England with an annualised rise of 5%.
