Retail sales proved resilient in the wake of the vote to leave the European Union, rising by 1.4% on the month and 5.9% on the year in July, figures from the Office for National Statistics showed.
The rise was much stronger than economists’ expectations, and compared with a 0.9% on-month fall in June.
Better weather could be a major factor, ONS chief economic adviser Joe Grice said. Anecdotal evidence suggests overseas visitors are being encouraged to spend by the weakness in the pound.
