Building work was started on 144,280 homes in England in the year to June, a rise of just 2% and well below the average of 200,000 needed to meet the government’s target of building a million new homes by 2020.
This is real progress but there is much more to do, communities secretary Sajid Javid said. That is why we are increasing our investment in housebuilding.
Starts by private housebuilders were up 10% on the year, while starts by housing associations and councils dropped by around 12%.
