Developers accused of restricting home supply

Developers are facing accusations that they are restricting the supply of new houses following a report by Civitas saying that although 2m planning permits were issued between 2006 and 2015, work was started on only 1.26m properties.

Civitas said its findings point to land hoarding in the hope land prices will rise further.

MPs are promising an inquiry into whether developers should be forced to build once planning permission is obtained. Home Builders Federation policy director David O’Leary said it could take considerable time to progress through the stages necessary for building to go ahead.
