Former chancellor George Osborne’s vision of a northern powerhouse has been cast in doubt after communities secretary Sajid Javid said the deal was off the table for the north-east of England.
Council leaders narrowly failed to agree on the deal, which would have given them new powers and £30m a year in return for them accepting an elected mayor.
