Working families cutting back on essentials to pay rent, mortgage

House prices and rents have risen to the point where they now account for 29% of the average household’s monthly income, according to research by Shelter and YouGov.

Some 44% of the households surveyed for the research said they had cut back on buying essential food or clothing in order to meet mortgage or rent costs, while 9% had skipped meals.

The figures are a sharp reminder of the tough choices working families are having to make, Shelter’s chief executive, Campbell Robb, said.
