Social: property professionals race to the top spot

Towerathlon-2016-

Brave property professionals battled stormy weather conditions last Friday to conquer the Broadgate TowerAthlon and raise more than £40,000 for LandAid.

Teams of adventurers – some in fancy dress – from across the industry pitted their fitness against each other racing up the 877 steps, then abseiling down the 539ft tower, before competing  in a 10-minute sprint cycle.

The event was organised by LandAid and the Worshipful Company of Chartered Surveyors, and the money raised will go towards creating new accommodation for 195 young people at the City YMCA London.

The joint winners for the fastest team were Bilfinger GVA and Farrells London. Bilfinger GVA won the gong for quickest individual stair run event, with Nathan Pask racing to the top in 4 minutes 41 seconds, while Farrells’ John Beattie was awarded the fastest cyclist, pedalling a distance of 6.2km in 10 minutes.

Life-saving recognition

Russell-PiperRussell Piper, from Morgan Lovell, has been named workplace hero at the St John Ambulance Everyday Heroes Awards, for saving the life of a colleague.

Piper was commended for his heroism in giving life-saving CPR to his colleague Stephen Headley, who had a cardiac arrest on a construction site.

The incident happened in February 2014 but Headley has only recently recovered sufficiently to nominate Piper for the Everyday Hero Award.

Morgan Lovell now offers AED training to its staff and has made defibrillators available to its site teams.

Challenging trek brings ray of sunshine

CityGrove-L&G-Nepal-challenge

Citygrove and Legal & General Real Assets’ challenging trek to Annapurna base camp in Nepal has made school outings easier for children at Ashgate Specialist Support Primary School in Manchester.  With the money raised, the firms have been able to provide the school with a bespoke Variety Sunshine Coach. The coach will be used to transport the children on a number of educational and social outings.

The team also raised £21,000 for the Himalayan Trust UK, which aims to ensure every child has access to education in the remote mountainous districts of Nepal.

The 30-strong group from 14 businesses summited 24 mountains and walk a total of 51km in 24 hours.

Two walkers that went the extra mile to boost their fundraising totals were Alex Harrington-Griffin of Coeur de Lion who carried a piñata for the duration of the trek and Richard Trubshaw of Paragon who hauled 24kg of sand up and down the peaks.
