Wolseley will close 80 branches, eliminate up to 800 jobs and shut a distribution centre as part of a £100m restructuring.
Chief executive John Martin said there had been general weakness in the UK market but that there remained a decent outlook.
The plumbing and heating supplies company currently has 737 branches.
