MIPIM UK: Derwent London’s White Collar Factory and Birmingham’s Grand Central were both headline winners at last night’s MIPIM UK Awards.

Supported by Estates Gazette and now in their third year, the Visionary awards celebrate people and projects making a difference to the built environment across the UK.

Grand Central was named Visionary Regeneration Project of the Year by a judging panel made up of members of the Estates Gazette and MIPIM UK teams. The 450,000 sq ft shopping and dining hub, anchored by John Lewis, opened above New Street Station earlier this year and, according to the judges, has “transformed the city”.

Derwent London’s White Collar Factory, EC1, delivered with architect AHMM and engineers Arup and AKT II, was topped out in April. It was described by the judges as providing “a real talking point across the industry” and was one of the first buildings in London to secure a WiredScore rating for its connectivity.

Brookfield was named Visionary Developer of the Year. The Canadian business acquired Hammerson’s London office portfolio in 2012 and has continued to develop it, lodging plans with the City Corporation for a 37-storey tower at 1 Leadenhall Street, EC3, in August.

The Visionary Architect/Masterplanner of the Year Award went to Coffey Architects. The firm’s projects include creating a show-stopping headquarters for U+I, the company formed from the merger of Development Securities and Cathedral Group in 2015.

The awards were presented by footballers Rio Ferdinand, Mark Noble and Bobby Zamora – the team behind the Legacy Foundation, the estates regeneration business launched earlier this year.
