The logistics sector could be affected first in the immediate aftermath of Brexit, the president of the CBI warned this morning.
Speaking ahead of the prime minister’s much-trailed address to the CBI annual conference, Paul Drechsler said the economy needed transitional arrangements and clarity to help ensure a smooth exit from the EU in 2019.
“Even if our legal obligations are clear and in place there would also be real, practical implications,” he told 1,000 business leaders in London. “Our ports, airports and logistics firms, if faced with new trading rules, could suddenly need new and potentially complex paperwork, which would take more time and money to process.”
And it could drive up short -term demand for space.
“As a result, they would need more warehouses to store more goods onsite, and more supply roads for the vehicles waiting to deliver them,” he said.
