Sales at John Lewis jumped 36% in the seven days preceding Christmas, but were down 9.4% in the last week of the month due to the timing of the bank holidays.
Sales at the Waitrose supermarket chain rose by 31.1% in the week ended 24 December.
Entertaining was a key theme, with sales of party food up 14%, its marketing director, Rupert Thomas, said.
