Enabling works have started on the first 725 homes and new rail station at Meridian Water in Enfield, north London.
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan today visited the £6bn scheme, which is expected deliver 10,000 homes and 6,700 jobs.
Doug Taylor, leader of Enfield Council, said: “Enfield Council is doing regeneration differently at Meridian Water, taking direct control to ensure the maximum benefits for residents and ratepayers.
“It is a pioneering approach for the public sector and unlike that for any other London regeneration site, with Enfield Council buying land, preparing designs, delivering Meridian Works, overseeing infrastructure investment, delivering low-carbon heating and hot water and directing the retail strategy.”
Barratt and SEGRO were appointed as development partners for the 210-acre scheme in mid-2016. Barratt has since offered an early phase from the scheme to the rental market.
