NORTH
The Northern Powerhouse, led by the five key cities of Manchester, Sheffield, Leeds, Liverpool and Newcastle, has been the focus of attention from central government for a number of years as part of its strategy to balance the UK economy, which is currently dominated by the South.
The number of successful sector clusters is growing, particularly in the regions surrounding the six Russell Group universities.
As well as benefitting in the longer term from investment in the HS2 rail line, which will provide fast connection with Birmingham and London, the government is also backing HS3, which will improve links between the key Northern cities.
In the Industrial Statement at the beginning of the year, the government also committed £556m to boost businesses and encourage growth within the Northern Powerhouse.
