Construction activity nudges higher

Construction output improved last month, driven by the civil engineering sub-sector.

The Markit/CIPS purchasing managers’ index for the sector rose to 52.5 from 52.2. Any reading above 50 indicates expansion. However, housebuilding output was the lowest in six months, while commercial building activity contracted, the first time it has done so since October.

Input costs rose at the second highest rate since August 2008. Optimism fell compared with January, when it had reached a 13-month high.
