London deputy mayor James Murray has said the Greater London Authority’s next priority will be to ensure Londoners understand what the mayor’s office is doing in terms of housing.
Almost a year after Sadiq Khan took office, some of his critics argue there has been a lot of policy, but not much action.
Murray said the GLA has secured new funding from central government, and offered a way forward with planning, “setting out some of the building blocks of how the sector would operate”.
“Crucial for me is how we are going to bring Londoners with us over the next few years,” he said.
He said there was a huge amount of guidance coming forward, including the London housing strategy draft, the London Plan and Supplementary Planning Guidance. This would include higher density development, the PRS and how more housing will be unlocked through infrastructure.
“We are going to be talking about a much more dense level of development across London. We need to have a more differentiated understanding of what higher density looks like,” he said.
He also said the GLA needed to gain the confidence of Londoners in terms of affordable housing, where the GLA can point to examples of success, and how infrastructure will unlock more development.
