Milton Keynes Council has taken space at Centre:mk to launch the UK’s first electric car centre as part of a £9m push to hit low emission vehicle targets.
The Electric Vehicle Experience Centre will be a 3,870 sq ft showroom where residents and businesses can test drive cars and lease them at subsidised rates.
The council agreed a five-year lease with Hermes Investment Management and AustralianSuper, the owners of Centre:MK, which will be funded by the government’s Go Ultra Low Cities Programme.
Milton Keynes received £9m of the £40m scheme aimed at hitting a target of 23% of all car sales being electric or plug-in by 2020.
Ed Sellick, asset manager at Hermes Investment Management, said: “We are excited to be supporting this initiative from Milton Keynes Council that demonstrates an innovative and committed approach to improving the future for the region.”
Brian Matthews, head of transport innovation at Milton Keynes Council, said: “We look forward to presenting the technology at such a distinctive retail and leisure destination, and believe that this partnership will have a truly positive impact on Milton Keynes.”
MMX Retail and CBRE acted for Centre:mk; Chargemaster represented EVEC.
