University College London has submitted plans for a 2m sq ft University-led redevelopment on London Legacy Development Corporation land, next to both the Olympic stadium and the Aquatics Centre, E20.
The planning application submitted to the LLDC covers a 14-acre site to be known as UCL East, and includes 1.72m sq ft of academic teaching space, as well as accommodation for 1,800 students.
The scheme will be built out in two distinct phases.
Phase 1 is expected to complete in 2020 and include:
- 465,000 sq ft of academic teaching space; and
- 670 student bed spaces.
Phase 2 is expected to complete in 2034 and include:
- 1.25m sq ft of academic teaching space; and
- 1,130 student bed spaces.
The scheme also includes 45,000 sq ft of retail and nearly 2,200 cycle parking spaces.
The UCL East Phase 2 site could be used for other projects up until the start of construction in 2030.
UCL currently has over 35,000 students from 150 countries and over 11,000 staff. Its current campus in Bloomsbury, WC1, has limited room for growth.
UCL Bartlett and UCL Engineering Sciences are to establish a collaborative space at Here East, the emerging technology hub within the Olympic Park, due to open in September. This new campus will be the largest single expansion of UCL since its foundation in 1826.
The LLDC is the freehold owner of the site and intends to grant a long leasehold to UCL.
LDA Design is the masterplanner. Deloitte Planning and AECOM Planning are planning consultants for UCL and the LLDC respectively.
