WEEKEND PAPERS: A million households who are renting privately could be made homeless by 2020 due to higher rents, benefit freezes and limited social housing, a report by homeless charity Shelter warns.
People renting privately are facing a substantial shortfall between the amount of benefit they receive and the cheapest rents in 83% of areas of England, Shelter says.
The freeze on housing benefit is pushing hundreds of thousands of private renters dangerously close to breaking point, Shelter’s interim chief executive, Graeme Brown, said.
