One in seven tenants spends more than half of income on rent

One in seven tenants who rent privately spends more than half of their income on their rent, against one in 50 homeowners who spend that amount on their mortgages, according to research by the Local Government Association.

Rent accounts for more than 30% of income for 40% of those renting privately. Only 11% of homeowners spend that on their mortgages.

It is no wonder there is a rental logjam, LGA housing spokesperson Judith Blake said. The LGA is calling for councils to be given extra powers to pay for more affordable homes.
