Hounslow approves 2m sq ft underground warehouse

Hounslow Council has granted developer Formal Investments planning permission for a 2m sq ft underground warehouse on a site alongside The Parkway (A312) and Bath Road (A4) – commonly known as Rectory Farm.

The space above ground will be used as a park. The warehouse will sit beneath the park in a style similar to the car park beneath Hyde Park, SW1.

The site is classified as green belt land, so building above ground is restricted, but excavation is allowed.

The development will be built in phases using a method known as sealed top-down construction, which is the method that was used to build the Shard, SE1.

Once the gravel from the site has been extracted, the warehouse will be built in its place and will serve as a logistics hub for Heathrow Airport and surrounding area.

The project will take between seven and 10 years to complete and could generate around 2,500 new jobs
