Report warns homeowners affected by HS2 could struggle to buy a comparable property

Homeowners on Mexborough’s Shimmer estate who face losing their homes to make way for HS2 could find it difficult to buy a similar property nearby, a report by Carter Jonas and published by the government finds.

Prices of properties on the estate are already 10% below when they were bought, the report said. That, combined with a lack of affordable housing in the local area, could see homeowners struggle to buy an equivalent property with the compensation they will get from the government, it said.

Transport secretary Chris Grayling has promised that the government will ensure that the homeowners can secure a comparable home.
