Landsec raises the bar for green energy

Landsec has installed the UK’s biggest shopping centre solar panel system – with close to 3,000 solar panels – at White Rose in Leeds.

The installation will supply 39% of the daytime electricity used in the centre, generating 680,000kWh of power a year – enough electricity to power 200 UK homes for 12 months.

Landsec said it expects the system to reduce carbon emissions at White Rose by 250 tonnes in its first year, which is equivalent to 500,000 miles of car emissions.

Scott Parsons, managing director of retail at Landsec, said: “We are extremely proud to have set a UK-wide benchmark for renewable electricity. Landsec is committed to setting and achieving ambitious sustainability targets and this is a fantastic example of how innovative thinking can benefit both retailers and the environment.”

The installation is part of Landsec’s ongoing sustainability strategy at White Rose, which includes a biodiversity programme, energy efficiency measures and a focus on reducing food waste.
