Newham councils estimates 13,000 landlords failing to declare rental income

Newham council in East London has identified some 13,000 landlords who have not signed up for self-assessment, normally a requirement for those renting out property.

The borough launched compulsory licencing for landlords in 2013, and gave their names and addresses to HM Revenue and Customs. It has 27,000 registered landlords.

It estimates a cost in unpaid tax in London of almost £200m.
