Thames garden bridge project dropped

The plan for a garden bridge across the Thames has been dropped, with the Garden Bridge Trust saying it would be formally closed after current London mayor Sadiq Khan withdrew Greater London Authority support for it earlier this year.

The previous London mayor, Boris Johnson, had supported the project. Projected costs ballooned to £200m, however, from £60m initially.

Some £37m has already been spent on the project, but that figure is likely to rise due to the government underwriting cancellation costs put at £9m.
