71,000 shortfall in care home places expected by 2025

The country could be facing a 71,000 shortfall in the number of care home places by 2025, according to a study by the Institute for Ageing at Newcastle University, published in The Lancet.

By then, an extra 353,000 people aged 65 or more will require care, split between 190,000 medium dependency and 163,000 high dependency places, it estimates.

The last 20 years have seen continued gains in life dependency, but not all of these years have been healthy, the study’s lead author, professor Carol Jagger, said.
