Retail sales rose 0.3% in volume terms in July, matching June’s monthly increase, but the annual rise was sharply lower, at 1.3% compared with 2.8%, figures from the Office for National Statistics showed.
Rising inflation is eating into people’s spending power, while Brexit concerns are making consumers adopt a more cautious approach to shopping.
Sales of food rose by 1.5%, while household goods sales volumes were 0.9% higher. All other sectors, including clothing and footwear, reported lower sales volumes.
