The narrowing of the gap between house prices in London and those in commuter towns around the capital, combined with the high cost of annual rail tickets, could mean commuters would be better off living in London.
For example, people commuting from Sevenoaks in Kent could be better off financially if they lived in zone three in the capital, according to analysis by the Daily Telegraph of data from Savills.
Its findings reveal that a quarter of the top 20 commuter towns around London could be more expensive than living in the capital.
