Government Property Unit to push take-up in the regions

The Government Property Unit is to push take-up in the regions to 9.8m sq ft in 2017, up 9% on the 10-year average, Savills has predicted.

Following its 190,000 sq ft deal in New Waverley in Edinburgh, the GPU will drive take-up in the regions as it continues its plan to establish 13 regional hubs.

However, as in London, tech and media occupiers dominated the leasing market in the regions in the first half, taking just under a quarter of space.

With employment expected to grow 4.6% in the next five years in the regions, Savills said there is a shortfall of office supply. Grade-A supply now stands at 1.8 years worth of grade-A demand – anything below two years is considered a shortfall, the company said.
