Charity and social events round-up

Summer arts project for young carers

British Land and charity Create teamed up to host a summer of national art programmes for young carers. A series of arts projects were hosted across its local and regional multi-let retail centres, giving young carers time away from their responsibilities, while enabling them to develop creative and social skills, help build relationships with their peers, and boost their self-esteem.

Construction aims to improve image

As the academic year returns, construction agents are aiming to improve the sector’s skills shortage and encourage more young people into the field.

Hudson Contract has teamed up with Matthews & Leigh Civil Engineering and H&L Construction Solutions to encourage more construction companies to offer apprenticeships to this year’s school leavers. Both firms employed an apprentice last year through Hudson Contract’s scholarship scheme.

David Jackson, founder and chairman of Hudson Contract, said: “With a lifetime of working in construction, I remain passionate about championing our industry as a great place to work, and doing everything I can to make it a profession of choice for young people today. Apprenticeships are crucial to enticing new talent into the industry because they provide the perfect environment for people to kick-start their careers. “

Meanwhile, construction consultancy Gleeds has committed to a global schools volunteering initiative with the Transformation Trust charity.

The Global Challenge volunteering event runs from 16 to 20 October. The UK teams will work with local secondary schools on a national competition, where students will plan all aspects of a hypothetical construction scheme. The best entries will enter the final to be judged by Olympian Sir Steve Redgrave and Gleeds chairman Richard Steer.

Steer said: “I am confident that this year’s Global Challenge can inspire students everywhere to look at construction in a new light.”

The winning team will attend a Q&A with Redgrave.
