Flats fail to win Herts and minds

Plans to build a block of luxury eco flats in Hertfordshire complete with a three-acre rooftop and robot-controlled car parking are being fought by angry residents.

The 14-storey project in Hemel Hempstead involves more than 400 zero-emission homes on a brownfield site, with a tennis court, gym, wine bar, library and playschool.

However, the Boxmoor Forest proposal submitted by Lumiere Developments could be thwarted by opponents who have dubbed the buildings an “oversized monstrosity”. Since the plans were submitted to the council, 68 of the 69 responses rejected it, while just one remained neutral. One objector wrote: “The design is laughable . . . covering it in greenery doesn’t fool anyone.”
