Rightmove says price rises show housing market is picking up

Britain’s biggest property price comparision site has reported a pick-up in the housing market, with more properties coming up for sale and a rise in asking prices.

Rightmove said that January had been its busiest month ever, with 141 million visits. It said, too, that asking prices had risen by an average of 0.8%, or £2,414, in the first two months of the year, indicating “cautious optimism”.

This is still well below the 1.6% monthly average recorded at this time of the year over the previous decade.

The average price of a UK property coming on to the market has risen by more than £2,400 in a month to just over £300,000 amid evidence of “record” levels of house-hunting activity, according the Guardian’s report.
