Nine Elms: inside Battersea Power Station and the US Embassy

EG took a tour inside the two mammoth projects, Battersea Power Station and the US Embassy, the cornerstones of the regeneration of Nine Elms in London.

At Battersea, whose phase one is now complete, up to 2,000 construction workers toil inside the roofless riverside icon each day. Four huge cores are being built to support the new floors and atrium, which from 2021 will house the 500,000 sq ft Apple HQ .

Despite US president Trump declining to visit, the US Embassy will bring 1,000 office workers to Nine Elms each day, as well as people applying for visas and other visitors. The influx is expected to breathe new life into the Nine Elms area.

EG was also able to take a look at two other major upcoming Nine Elms regen projects: the 50-acre New Covent Garden Market, and the massive swathe of land close Vauxhall station assembled by Chinese companies.

To be delivered by St Modwen and Vinci, the market will be a long-term project to be developed over the next decade. It will be built in phases and remain in operation during this period, and when finished will include more publicly accessible food and leisure provision, start-up space for food-related companies, and new east/west access routes.

The land assembled by Chinese consortia consists of three sites: CLS’s Vauxhall Square, bought by R&F Properties; St Modwen’s Nine Elms Square, sold to R&F and CC Land; and One Nine Elms, previously sold to Wanda and reportedly sold on to R&F.

Despite the three sites having separate planning permissions, they now represent a huge swathe of development land that will control access to Battersea Power Station from Vauxhall station.
