Westfield has acquired the Grade II listed Dimco building next to its Westfield London shopping centre from Transport for London.
It is planning to incorporate the property into its £600m extension that it is currently working on and has submitted plans to convert the buildings into around 33,000 sq ft of events space.
The space would sit next to the Westfield Square and close to the Wood Lane Tube station.
The shopping centre owner is currently preparing for the first in a series of phased openings for its extension, with John Lewis scheduled to open on March 20.
A spokesperson for Westfield said: “Westfield has submitted plans to the local authority that promise to breathe life back into one of the Grade II listed Dimco buildings, located adjacent to Westfield London.
“This will bring the building into public use as a flexible exhibition and events space.
“The proposed conversion, which would protect the fabric and heritage of the original building, will see the building host a series of shows, exhibitions and community events in line with the mayor of London Sadiq Khan’s vision for a vibrant day and night-time economy.”
The Dimco buildings, constructed in 1899, were designed by Harry Bell Measures as the engine and boiler houses of the Wood Lane generating station which supplied energy for the Central London Railways.
Today they represent the earliest example of an electricity generating station built for the London Underground. They were completed in 1899 and Grade II listed in 1988 in recognition of their heritage.
Westfield built the centre around them and in 2008, when Westfield London opened, conversion works were undertaken in consultation with English Heritage.
The works included extensive repairs to the external fabric and internal masonry, reformation of some windows, replacement and repair of the roof structure, a new internal tarmac floor finish, extensive cleaning and replacement of the glazed bricks that were typical of TfL colours 100 years ago.
One of the Dimco buildings was temporarily put to use as the White City bus station.
