Cheesegrater 2 plans submitted

Plans have been submitted for a 1.2m sq ft City tower at 100 Leadenhall Street, EC3.

Hong Kong-based Lai Sun Development, which invests in the UK via London-based developer London & Oriental, has partnered with architect Skidmore, Owings & Merrill on the 56-storey tower on the edge of the City’s tower cluster.

Dubbed the Cheesegrater 2, the building has an asymmetric design that rises at 262m at an angle, with office floor plates that range from about 20,400 sq ft at the bottom to 7,500 sq ft at the top.

When L&O revealed plans for the tower last year, partner Mark Cannell, said: “The reason it tapers is because we wanted to be deferential to St Paul’s Cathedral. Although it’s not a verified view, there’s an important view from Fleet Street and we wanted to make sure the impact on the St Paul’s sky gap was as minimal as possible.

100 Leadenhall Street will include more than 75,000 sq ft of shops on the ground floor and parking places for 1,200 bicycles, aiming for a “largely car-free development”.

Lai Sun acquired three buildings at 100, 106 and 107 Leadenhall Street during 2014 and 2015 for a total £188.5m to assemble the development site.

Construction is expected to start in 2019 and will take about four years to complete.
