Oxford Nanopore Technologies to expand in Harwell science campus

UK-based DNA sequencing firm Oxford Nanopore Technologies has agreed to take 34,500 sq ft in a new high-tech manufacturing facility at the Harwell Innovation and Science Campus in Oxfordshire.

This addition of a new purpose-built facility to Oxford Nanopore Technologies’ existing footprint at the campus will allow the firm to manufacture and distribute its DNA/RNA sequencing products in one place and increase its manufacturing capabilities.

The new facility includes high-spec clean rooms, laboratories, office space and logistics areas.

Harwell Campus is planning to create 5.5m sq ft of new science, innovation, technology and business space by 2025. It has already completed 400,000 sq ft of space and is planning to submit a new planning application to develop a further 750,000 sq ft of commercial space in the first half of this year.

Gordon Sanghera, chief executive of Oxford Nanopore Technologies, said: “This facility represents a significant increase in our capabilities and reflects growing demand for our products across more than 70 countries.

“Building on existing facilities at Harwell, we will continue to access world-leading testing facilities, be part of a unique ecosystem of people dedicated to science and innovation, and take advantage of the campus space and development capabilities to create a high-tech bespoke facility.”

William Cooper, partner, Harwell Science and Innovation Campus, said: “We are delighted that Oxford Nanopore has chosen to expand at Harwell. We’ve seen it grow into a phenomenal world-leading company and by supporting its major scale-up we are sparking the start of a new era of high-tech manufacturing on the campus and in Oxfordshire.”
