Allied London plans refurb of ABC in Manchester

Allied London has submitted a planning application for the refurbishment of the 180,000 sq ft ABC Building in Manchester city centre.

The former Astley & Byrom House, which Allied London bought last July from West Midlands Pension Fund, will include more than 120,000 sq ft of office space alongside shops and leisure, including a cinema and a gym.

The scheme, designed by architect Levitt Bernstein, is divided into the Astley, Byrom and Cooper buildings, which are divided as follows:
Astley: 6,300 sq ft office floorplates across floors 1-10
Byrom: 8,008 sq ft office floorplates across floors 1-6
Cooper: 24,617 sq ft of ground floor retail across three units; 25,532 sq ft of office space on the first floor

The ABC Building is opposite Allied London’s No 1 Spinningfields, extending the company’s development of the area.

Allied London announced preliminary plans for the 1960s buildings at MIPIM this year. It said it would target occupiers in film, TV, media and tech to complement its Enterprise City scheme – a collection of workspaces for the tech and creative industries within its St. John’s development.

Plans were previously submitted in 2015, before Allied London bought the building, to tear it down and replace it with three office blocks of between six and 14 storeys. Despite approval, plans did not move forward and the building was later sold.
