Britain’s high streets suffered their worst May trading in 12 years last month despite better weather and the feel-good factor of a royal wedding, in further evidence of the difficulties facing retail stores.
High street sales fell 2.2% year-on-year, according to the high street sales tracker from BDO. “It is eight months since in-store like-for-like sales have shown any real growth — above 1%,” the accounting firm said.
Britain’s retail sector is going through dramatic change, with a huge shift to online just as wages have been squeezed by higher inflation and consumers have decided to spend more on experiences.
