Barton Willmore plans to replace retail with resi in Sale

Barton Willmore has submitted a planning application to redevelop The Square shopping centre in Sale, in favour of more residential units.

The proposals for the £70m scheme were made to Trafford Council on behalf of developer Maloneview.

The regeneration would partially demolish the shopping centre to free up space for 202 residential units, ranging from studios to townhouses.

It would also provide 30,000 sq ft of new leisure and retail space, including a six-screen cinema, and create a pedestrian plaza and avenue.

A replacement multi-storey car park is also proposed, to accommodate the projected increase in residents, shoppers and commercial users.

Barton Willmore and Maloneview carried out a consultation with the local community before submitting the masterplan, by hosting public drop-in events in November.

More than 600 local people attended the events. Feedback showed 90% of residents either “strongly agreed” or “agreed” with the principle of regenerating the town centre.

Mark Harris, planning director at Barton Willmore, said: “The proposed redevelopment of The Square in the heart of Sale has been welcomed by the vast majority of the stakeholders we have engaged with already.”

Mark Rebbeck, commercial director at Maloneview, added: “Delivery of this landmark scheme will act as a catalyst to the town centre as a whole, allowing it to become a leading destination for people to live, work and play.”

Trafford Council will hold a consultation before it will make a decision on the application.
