Sainsbury’s defends merger as sales fall flat

The chief executive of J Sainsbury came out fighting yesterday against suggestions he had taken his eye off the ball on trading after the supermarket chain reported lacklustre growth in underlying grocery sales.

Mike Coupe faced down criticism that his planned £7.3 billion takeover of Asda, which is owned by Walmart, was distracting the management from the running of the day-to-day business.
