Manchester City Council unveils plans for 15,000 new homes

Manchester City Council has revealed plans for the development of 15,000 new homes in the Northern Gateway – a joint venture with the Far East Consortium.

The 155ha Northern Gateway development will be one of the largest residential-led regenerations in the UK, extending from Victoria Station and NOMA to Queen’s Road.

Plans will include the development of 15,000 new homes over the next 15 years with at least 3,000 affordable homes across a range of tenures, opening up the north of the city centre to more mixed-use development.

It will connect seven new and emerging neighbourhoods in the Irk River Valley through extensive green spaces and public squares known as City River Park.

The draft strategic regeneration framework will be considered by the council executive on 25 July.

The council will lead an eight-week consultation period in August and September, with the final strategic regeneration framework expected to be completed later in the year.

Suzanne Richards, executive member for housing and regeneration at Manchester City Council, said: “It’s important that as one of the largest residential-led developments the UK has ever seen, the Northern Gateway, maintains its authentic Manchester roots.

“The Northern Gateway is a once in a lifetime opportunity to transform the Irk Valley through he unique City Park and will, we think, deliver a template of how city living can be transformed to improve lifestyles and a collective sense of place.”

Tom Fenton, project director at FEC, added: “The vision is ambitious, but we believe that it is grounded and entirely capable of being realised and we are excited about beginning to deliver it over the coming months.

“Going out to public consultation marks another important milestone in the evolution of the project and takes us a step closer to be able to deliver much needed housing for Manchester close to the city centre.”
