Garden Bridge backers ‘may have to pay’

The backers of the Thames Garden Bridge, including Joanna Lumley, could be held responsible for the project’s failure, an expert in public and procurement law has said.

Jason Coppel, QC, wrote in a legal opinion seen by the Architects’ Journal that the members of the Garden Bridge Trust may have breached their legal duties to act with reasonable skill and care by agreeing to enter into a construction contract in 2016 while substantial planning hurdles remained and insufficient funds had been raised.

The 366m tree-lined bridge was abandoned last August before construction had begun. It cost the Department for Transport and Transport for London about £46.4m.
