Peabody sets up consortium for Thamesmead vision

Peabody has appointed a consortium headed by LDA Design to create a landscape-led vision for the £1bn regeneration of Thamesmead in south-east London.

The housing association, which owns 65% of the 1,878 acres of land in Thamesmead and 85% of the developable land, will use the resulting Landscape and Green Infrastructure Strategy to direct its transformation of Thamesmead’s waterspace, landscape and public realm.

The programme involves the GLA, TfL, the London Borough of Bexley and the Royal Borough of Greenwich. The consortium includes SNC-Lavalin/Atkins, Land Management Services, Green Infrastructure Consultancy, Vivid Economics, Robert Bray Associates, and architect Project Orange.

Thamesmead currently has a population of 46,000, but this is expected to rise to 100,000 in the next 30 years.

The area’s neighbourhood parks cover a total of 141 acres. It has 7km of canals and five lakes, as well as 4.8km of river frontage and 30,000 trees.

“We want Thamesmead to realise its enormous potential through being shaped by local people,” said Phil Askew, Peabody’s director of landscaping and placemaking. “With its wealth of natural resources, Thamesmead has all the elements to create something special – making it an even better place to live or visit.”
