House price rises to ‘pay for university’

Buying your child a property in the town or city where they attended university could have covered the cost of their tuition, research by an online estate agent suggests.

House prices in Britain’s top 50 university towns and cities have risen by an average of £28,725 since 2015, enough to cover the tuition fees on a three-year degree, Housesimple.com, said.

Anyone buying in Coventry would have made the largest return. Average house prices in the city rose by 61%, or £70,065, between June 2015 and June 2018 to £184,690, according to its analysis of Land Registry data. Coventry, with the University of Warwick on its outskirts, has been boosted further by the recovery in manufacturing in the area.
